Ignaz Semmelweis: the father of infection control

As Ignaz Semmelweis started his activities as a doctor, going to one of the child bed fever – a highly infectious disease is taking the lives of the mid-1800’s, many young mothers there. Why the infection spread so strong, was not immediately known, were suspected, but less medical than superstitious backgrounds. Ignaz Semmelweis, however, had a solid suspicion and, eventually, became the “Savior of mothers”.

The Hungarian came up in 1818 in Buda, now Budapest to the world. At the University in Vienna he received his doctor’s degree and specialized in the field of obstetrics. On this day in 1847, he was hired, finally, in the maternity clinic of the Vienna General hospital, where, as elsewhere, the deadly child bed fever spread.

Ignaz Semmelweis was assumed that Doctors and midwives would give a more infectious Material by the preceding operations, and the autopsies of the expectant mothers in the hospital. The doctors introduced new rules for the clinic: The hands should be regularly washed and disinfected.
