What is the Blood Type Diet?
The Blood Type diet was made popular by naturopathic physician Dr Peter D’Adamo in 1996.
He believes each blood type represents genetic traits of our ancestors, which includes the diet they evolved to thrive on.
His book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, was a New York Times bestseller.
A blood type diet “makes health and nutrition recommendations based on your unique genetic individuality.”
What diet should you eat?
• Type A – The agrarian or cultivator
According to D’Adamo those with blood type A are better at digesting carbohydrates than other blood types, but struggle to digest and metabolise animal protein and fat.
This diet closely resembles a vegetarian diet all of, or most of the time.
According to the Blood Type Diet those with Type A should eat a diet rich in plants, completely free of “toxic” red meat.
Dietary fats should come from olive oil, coconut oil and other plant fats, and organic foods are also encouraged.
D’Adamo also recommends not drinking too much alcohol or caffeine, but drinking lots of herbal teas and water.
The exercise best suited for this diet is low-impact, calming exercises like yoga, tai chi and walking.
• Type B – The nomad
Blood Type Bs have a high tolerance of a variety of different foods, according to D’Adamo.
This means they can eat a balanced diet, leaning towards a paleo diet.
Those with blood Type B can eat plants and most meats, excluding chicken and pork, in addition to some dairy.
But – according to D’Adamo – they should avoid wheat, corn, lentils, peanuts, sesame seeds and tomatoes.
• Type AB – The enigma
This blood type will thrive on a diet which is a mix between Type A and B.
So they may find a diet of eat seafood, tofu, dairy, beans and grains suits them.
The best choices are leafy greens, apricots, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, kiwi, lemons, pineapples and plums.
But they should avoid kidney beans, corn, beef and chicken.
D’Adamo recommends avoiding caffeine, alcohol and smoked or cured meats.
• Type O – The hunter
Type Os are said to be able to metabolise cholesterol found in animal products more efficiently than other blood types.
Those with blood Type O should eat a high-protein diet based largely on meat, fish, poultry, as well as some fruits and vegetables.
However, they should limit grains, legumes and dairy.
It can be most described as the paleo diet.
