Vezzoli explained the health benefits. She said: “Olive oil is high in the monounsaturated fat oleic acid, which is a healthy fat.
“Our body needs fats in order to absorb nutrients from food (especially vitamins A, E, D and K), to make hormones (such as Vitamin D, oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone), for energy production, to protect our cell membranes and to protect our vital organs and keep our internal body temperature regular.”
Furthermore, she added: “Oleic acid in particular has anti-inflammatory properties. Olive oil is also rich in antioxidant nutrients, which help prevent cellular damage and further fight off inflammation.
“Studies have shown olive oil can benefit our heart health, joint health (especially arthritis), brain health, improve good cholesterol levels and metabolic health. A new report has shown that consuming 20ml of raw olive oil daily has a beneficial effect in coronary artery disease (CAD).”
While olive oil has been found to have health benefits, Vizzoli says some oils are more effective than others.
She explained: “Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed, so retains most of its antioxidant properties. However, all olive oils, as long as they are cold pressed, have beneficial effects.
“You would choose different types of olive oil according to your culinary needs. For example, extra virgin olive oil has a distinct peppery taste which makes it perfect for dressings and drizzling over foods.
“Other types of olive oils have a milder taste and would be more suited for including into recipes where you’d want a more neutral taste such as mayonnaise or swirling into yogurt or some no-bake granola bars. Always store your olive oil in a cool, dark place.”
Alongside Vizzoli, Express.co.uk also spoke to renowned olive oil producer Filippo Berio. Their UK managing director, Walter Zanré, said: “Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a very natural product with no processing.
“Effectively it is simply the juice of the olives, mechanically extracted by pressing, which is then filtered to remove any remaining tiny fragments of the olive. Filippo Berio uses a two stage filtration process (through flour and paper) which ensures the product is bright, clear and will remain in perfect condition for as long as possible.”
“The word ‘refining’ conjures up a chemical process more associated with the petrochemical industry. At Filippo Berio we have made considerable investments working with local universities to develop a physical refining process that minimises the use of chemicals.
“A combination of fractional distillation and filtration is used to achieve the results that other refineries achieve with a chemical process.”
Meanwhile, one of their agronomists, Filippo Manni, spoke about how they protect the olives when they’re being grown: “The traditional method for combatting the olive fruit fly is to spray the olive trees with insecticides when the olive fruit flies are present.
“However, the insecticides are only active for two weeks which means every other week, farmers have to spray the entire olive grove. This costs time and money.
“The brilliant thing about these pheromone traps is they identify where the olive fly is – so the farmer only needs to treat those plants.
“As well as saving time and money you reduce the amount of chemicals used, which is also much better for the environment and the olives.”
What these studies show is how olive oil can benefit the body in several ways.
Despite this, olive oil is not a silver bullet, it should form part of a balanced and varied diet.
Alongside this varied diet, exercise should be engaged in.
The recommended figure is a minimum of 150 minutes per week.
