One large study which demonstrated this involved more than 34,000 people with hypertension.
Strawberries contain antioxidant compounds called anthocyanins, which are a type of flavonoid.
Researchers found the study participants with the highest intake of anthocyanins – mainly from strawberries – had a 8 per cent reduction in the risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with a low anthocyanin intake.
Alongside strawberries, blueberries also appeared to have this blood pressure lowering effect.
This is because blueberries are also high in anthocyanins.
Another fruit which has also been proven to lower blood pressure is the kiwi fruit.
A daily serving of kiwi can reduce blood pressure in people with even mildly elevated levels, according to a study.
Researchers compared the effects apple and kiwis had on people with slightly high blood pressure.
The results showed eating three kiwis a day for eight weeks resulted in a more significant reduction in blood pressure, compared with eating one apple a day for the same period of time.
The researchers concluded the bioactive substances in kiwis caused the reduction.
Fruit in general are good for high blood pressure because they’re high in potassium.
Potassium can help lower blood pressure as it helps balance out the negative effects of salt in a person’s diet.

This will help your kidneys to work more efficiently – and help to lower your blood pressure to a healthy level.
