Getting on with your day may be difficult when arthritis pain strikes. Yet, research reveals CBD ointment could prevent painful episodes, allowing you to live life to the fullest.
Medical News Today explains cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a chemical that occurs naturally in cannabis plants.
However, unlike delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – also found in cannabis plants – CBD isn’t psychoactive.
This means CBD oil doesn’t alter a person’s mental state, nor does it create a “high”.
Researchers from the Departments of Pharmacology and Anaesthesia at Dalhousie University, Canada, investigated the pain relief CBD can provide.
They found CBD reduced “joint inflammation” and “blocked osteoarthritis pain” in their experiment.
Arthritis Action reported osteoarthritis is the “most common” type of arthritis.
Predominantly, the finger joints, thumbs, knees and hips develop osteoarthritis.
The inflammatory condition can cause “pain and stiffness”, which can appear some days and disappear on others.
A research team from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy examined the benefits of topical CBD application.
Different strengths of CBD gels – 0.6, 3.1, 6.2 or 62.3mg/day – were applied to areas of arthritis pain.
The trial went on for four days, whereby the higher concentrations of CBD gel “significantly reduced joint swelling”.

How does it work?
Medical News Today outlines two lines of thought when it comes to CBD and effective arthritis pain relief.
The first notion is that CBD binds to a CB2 receptor, which “plays a role in the immune system by managing pain and inflammation”.
An alternative belief is that CBD causes the body to produce natural cannabinoids that attach to the CB2 receptors.
Whichever line of thought gains the most popularity, they both agree that CBD helps to reduce inflammation and pain.
CBD is available as an oil, powder, cream or gels and is legally sold in the UK.
Arthritis Action notes that “painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines can be prescribed” to treat arthritis.
The charity also recommends keeping to a healthy weight to help reduce painful symptoms.
Moreover, muscle-strengthening exercises are looked upon favourably, such as working with resistance bands.
Distraction techniques, such as completing crosswords, may work to keep your mind off any soreness.
It may also be helpful to engage in meditation to reduce stress levels, and getting adequate amounts of shuteye per night.
Corticosteroid injections – administered by a healthcare professional – can help especially painful joints and help to improve function.
