When it comes to arthritis, some foods are known to reduce painful symptoms while others are notorious for triggering arthritis flare-ups. Arthritis can vary from person to person, so not everyone’s ‘trigger foods’ will be the same: keeping a food diary can help you identify yours. These are four of the worst foods for arthritis.

Arthritis can flare up when there are high levels of inflammation in the body, causing pain in your joints.

Therefore, eating foods rich in anti-inflammatory compounds and antioxidants can help prevent the painful symptoms of arthritis.

On the other hand, some foods are notorious for triggering arthritis symptoms.

If you have arthritis, you should avoid these 4 types of foods: what are they?

1 – Anything with added sugar

Added sugar has been shown to increase the risk of arthritis, and irritate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

This means sugary fizzy drinks, sweets and cakes are off the menu or at least should be limited to a special treat once in a while.

As well as irritating symptoms, foods with added sugar are classic culprits for piling on the pounds.

Being overweight can aggravate arthritis pain as the added weight puts more pressure on your joints, causing pain.

2 – Processed foods

Any healthy diet advocates eating natural, whole foods, and stepping away from anything highly-processed.

Processed foods tend to be high in salt, sugar, saturated fats and other preservatives that can cause inflammation.

Fast foods, ready meals, some breakfast cereals and takeaways are among the worst offenders.

When choosing your food make sure you check the label and try to avoid anything high in salt.

3 – Alcohol

Booze can cause painful arthritis flare-ups, particularly gout attacks.

Again, alcohol can also be very calorific and drinking too much can contribute to weight gain.

In any healthy diet, alcoholic drinks are best enjoyed in moderation, and arthritis-friendly diets are no different.

4 – Red meat

Red meat is associated with higher levels of inflammation in your body.

You don’t need to cut out red meat completely, but cutting down to only enjoying red meat once a week will reduce your risk of arthritis symptoms.
